Used Unimog for sale
The Unimog is a vehicle model line brought to market by Mercedes- Benz. Diamler AG has therefore taken over the production of Unimog vehicles. The Unimog was developed by Albert Friedrich as a small lorry with a portal axle and four wheel drive equipment carrier. It is used mostly in forest and agricultural applications, for municipal tasks, and by the military. Due to their construction and configuration, some Unimog models are especially well suited for use in especially rough terrain for tasks like disaster response or as a drilling vehicle. The vehicles are classified front seat tractors with all wheel drive.
Important features of Unimog vehicles
The Unimog vehicles were originally designed for agricultural applications and should have been constructed similarly to a two axle tractor. But the Unimog vehicles were outfitted with four equally sized wheels and designed with all-wheel drive with an integrated locking differential. Additionally, these original Unimogs were equipped with coil sprung portal axles, protected drive shafts, a ladder frame, and drum brakes. This construction optimizes the articulation of the axle, an attribute that further increases the offroad capabilities of the Unimog. Reduction gears installed directly on the wheel hubs provide an increased rotational frequency of the drive shaft, reducing the torque necessary for power transfer. The reduction gears are installed on all four wheels. Despite the smaller wheel diameter, they still provide a high ground clearance.
Unimog models
The original model line were designed as agricultural vehicles and have a straight ladder frame. The Unimog vehicles are equipped with a precombustion chamber automobile motor OM 636, with a displacement of 1.8 liters. The last original Unimog was constructed in 1974, giving the model line Unimog S a special role. At this point only the Unimog 404 line was in production. In contrast to the original Unimog, this series was designed as a heavy goods truck. It came stock with a gasoline engine. In 1975 the 404 was replaced with the 435 line. The first midlevel Unimog was the model 406 and light Unimogs are derived from the midrange. They share the same construction, but are equipped with lower power motors. Heavy Unimogs have been sold since 1974 and are equipped with a heavy truck engine and a square cab. Since 2000 the middle and light Unimog series have been replaced by newly designed models.
Unimog 406 - technical specifications
Between 1963 and 1989 a total of 37,069 Unimog 406 vehicles were produced at the Mercedes Benz factory in Gaggenau. This was the first series of mid-weight Unimog vehicles. The wheelbase was lengthened to 2380 mm and the motor power was doubled compared to the earlier models 401 and 411. Large volume commercial vehicle engines were built into the 406 line. Future Unimog lines were optically and technically based on the Unimog 406. The four different model variants were delievered with two or four door cabins and also included a convertible model, leading to several technical revisions of the Unimog 406. In 1964, the precombustion chamber diesel motor OM 312 was replaced by the direct injection motor OM 352. Since 1973, the Unimog 406 has been equipped with disc brakes. This model was especially used in foresty and agriculture.
